Business Opportunities in Myanmar Agriculture – Challenges and Scope of Investment

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is undertaking necessary measures to maximize private domestic participation in accordance with the market- oriented economy to attract foreign investment and accelerate growth and development in the agricultural sector. The local and foreign entrepreneurs are invited to invest and establish mutually beneficial trade and business in the form of Joint Venture or 100% investment in the following areas:-

  • Land utilization

  • Establishment of Agro-based industries

  • Assembling and manufacturing of light agricultural machinery and small farm implements

  • Manufacturing of agricultural inputs and related support products

  • Trading of Agricultural commodities, input supplies and machineries

Yezin Agricultural University (YAU), located in Yezin Village about 18 km (11 mi) north of Pyinmana in Naypyidaw, is the only institution of higher learning in agriculture in Myanmar. The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation administers university and offers primarily a four-year Bachelor Degree of Agricultural Science (B.Agre Sc.). The university began a master’s degree program in 1978 and a doctorate degree program in 2001.

The YAU produces about 250 bachelor’s degree graduates and a small number of master’s and doctoral graduates each year. As of 2008, YAU has produced a total of about 140 master’s graduates and 15 PhDs since the graduate programs’ inception.

The small number of YAU graduates continues to be “dismally low” to adequately meet the needs of Myanmar’s agricultural sector. (The country with a population over 50 million had only about 7500 agricultural scholars in 2006.)
The government of India would help Myanmar to establish the Advanced Centre for Agriculture Research and Education (ACARE Centre) at the University of Agriculture (Yezin) to produce agriculturalists.

Growth in agriculture productivity has been recognized to be pro-poor; having a direct role in raising real incomes of the rural poor, and thus reducing poverty.

The agricultural sector in Myanmar presents huge potential and abundant business opportunities for foreign investors & traders, especially as Myanmar now proactively seek to upgrade, add value and regain her pre-eminence in the world’s agricultural markets, the pole position as the largest rice exporter in the world, way back in the ’60s.
